Why hunt?

Why Hunt? That is an excellent question. Shall we explore and see what comes of it here?

Why hunt? Unless one is destitute and hungry, there really is no need for it. Not today in our modern age when one can quickly go into a supermarket and purchase meat. Besides, it isn’t the poor and hungry that is doing the hunting anyway. Hunting today is done by so-called sportsmen seeking a trophy to place on their wall. But ask yourself? With all kind of electronic gadgets available to hunters today, is hunting really a sport? No. It isn’t. Now, if a hunter was to hunt as if the Indians did for food and clothing, it could be called a sport, but that will never happen. Now, hunting is just an activity centered on fancy new guns and hunting gadgets.
Turkey Hunting.

But, back to the original question, why hunt? I’ve heard many reasons for hunting over the years, but none of them justified. To me, killing an animal that was basically minding its own business and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time is no justification for any reason voiced. “I love venison or duck,” I’ve heard as one prevalent reason. Nowadays, a person can purchase venison or duck on-line. But does one really “need” to eat venison or duck? No.  I love animals. I can honestly say that I have never hunted nor had any interest in hunting. For me, I never had any interest to chase down and shoot Bambi, Bugs Bunny or Simba. Some have. I currently live in Mississippi where hunting seems to be the number one activity, probably more so than making love if you hear them talk about it. They’re proud of hunting. It’s been supported and promoted by the state. Our local newspaper regularly posts color photos of proud hunters with their “trophy kill” whether it is a deer or a rabbit. Young children that I don’t think even know what hunting is are in the photos. Sound sickening to you? It does to me. But that is the mindset of a hunter. Me, I see an animal and all I want to do is hug it and protect it. On my property in the country hunting is not allowed. I don’t care how far a hunter has chased “his trophy”, I don’t allow hunting. If a hunter shows up on my property to chase his prey, he/she better be prepared for an arrest or getting shot himself because I will call the sheriff and I will press charges for trespassing. I will also shoot that hunter if they try to shoot me or that animal.

I may lose some readers after this post. That’s fine. Sorry to see you go, but I don’t hunt. I don’t like hunting. I don’t approve of it. This may be America and you’re allowed to do it, but not near or anywhere around me. For me, hunting is wrong for so many reasons. One doesn’t need to hunt. This isn’t the pioneer days. There is no sport in it. The hunter has too many advantages. ATVs? Really? Dogs? Night vision scopes, range finders, blood trackers and more. Come on. Get real. If you’re really a sportsman, let’s see you hunt as in the olden days. A hunter and his gun. That’s it. Nothing else. No camo gear. No deer stands. No false scents. No animal decoys and decoy calls. Just you, your gun, or bow, and the animal. No compound or cross bows either. Hunt the animal fairly on equal terms. I still won’t approve, but I’ll respect you more as a true hunter.

The government is no better. When they decide there is too many animals in existence, they order the animals must be culled and hunting is promoted. We don’t kill humans when there are too many of us. We don’t kill, though we should, pedophiles, serial murders and rapists, though there are way too many of them, but we blatantly kill animals without a second thought. Horrible. Wrong. Inhumane. Horrific. I could go on, but you get the idea on how I feel about it. For me, hunting in any form is wrong. Not necessary.

Why hunt? Got me. Personally, I don’t get the attraction, the need to do it. I guess people need to prove themselves, have control over something helpless, innocent and basically harmless. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m no idiot. If I see a wild boar or a grizzly bear charging at me or mine, I will kill to defend myself or those I care about, but you’ll never see me out and about looking like some fool hunting down an animal I don’t need to eat just so I can hang his head on my wall or make his body into a rug. And while we’re on the subject, when did it become all right to hunt giraffes? Where is the sport in that? Where is the need? Just another trophy. I love animals. I hate people. People have made this world what it is. We’re killing the bees off because of the pesticides and gunk we spray on our lawns and in the air. We’ve made huge tons of garbage heaps in the oceans. I don’t need to go on. Why hunt? There is no real reason to do so except out of egos, or because it is “tradition.” I have family members that used to hunt. They stopped. Why? They saw no real reason for it anymore. They don’t need the food. Hunting is no longer a sport. It’s become all about trophies and nothing else. That’s my humble take on it anyway, and because I own some property in the country, there will always be a haven, even just a small one, a refuge for those animals that need to feel safe and truly are. I don’t hunt and on my land, neither will hunters.

That’s it for now. How do you feel about hunting? Do you hunt? Why? If you don’t, why don’t you? Did you ever hunt? Why did you stop? Why do you think people hunt when they really don’t have to anymore?

Until next time….hug your animals. Tell them you love them. If you don’t have a pet, adopt one. Make adoption your first option when seeking a pet. Adopt. Don’t shop. Can’t adopt. Please consider fostering one. The animal will have the taste of home and the shelter will cover the expenses. Can’t foster? Make a donation or volunteer at your local shelter. Whatever you do, however you do it, please be a voice for the animals large and small. All it takes is one to make a difference, good or bad. I’m one for the animals. Are you? Thanks for visiting. Stay safe. Be strong. Be happy. Smile. Show compassion. Be nice to one another. Pass it onward.

What I learned from my rescue pet children…

What I learned from my rescue pet children…

My 2 girls Cheyenne (dog) & Princess.

Life is for living and nothing else. No regrets. No vengeance. No looking back. Life for a rescue animal once they’re safely tucked away in their forever home is a joyful one. I know. I have rescued a total of fourteen dogs and cats over the years. I currently have five in my home, in my arms, in my laps and totally in my love. Most importantly, they’ve allowed me to love them. Ask any pet owner: It is a privilege to acquire a pet's loyalty and love. Life is also for cuddling, playing, eating and watching life, birds and bugs go by.

My boy dog Damon & his two new kitten sisters.

Animals, specifically rescues don’t let life hold them back or keep them down. They literally live, “if life throws you lemons, make lemonade.” Better yet, they keep making lemonade and gulp it down with relish. I know. I've seen them do it more than once. They don't hold grudges. They don't complain. They love you no matter what. They'll always be there for you. They'll never abandon you at your darkest, deepest moment when you need them most.

 the 2 new kittens I rescued/adopted.

Perhaps, I'm just biased but for me, animals are the best. For the most part, people leave me empty and angry. People know better: They know right from wrong. When they harm someone they know what they're doing.  When they harm a helpless and innocent animal; when they throw a helpless kitten or puppy into a trash dumpster; when they shoot a dog in the head dead for not fighting;, when they poison and kill annoying neighbor cats with antifreeze; when they run over a dog or cat with a lawn mower; humans know exactly what they're doing. They intend to create harm. There is nothing innocent about them. Animals, on the other hand are the only true innocent living beings. Animals don't harm anyone, humans or other animals just for the fun of it. Animals hunt and kill for food in order to survive. Hunters, on the other hand mostly hunt for the fun of it and to add a trophy to their wall. Not all hunters seek trophies, but in our day and age, most don't need to hunt for food. They do it for the thrill and nothing more, which is why I don't like hunters or approve of hunting.

My boy (dog) and the kittens.

My rescues have a reason for hating people, but they don't. My older girl Princess was rescued at 3months old from a kill shelter. She will be 21 in August. My boy Damon came from an abusive home where the husband beat the wife. She surrendered three dogs to a shelter when she finally left her husband. He was one of them. My girl Cheyenne was rescued from an Indian reservation where the average lifespan of a dog is just 2 years old. It seems that Native Americans like to shoot guns and arrows and beat animals for their amusement. With me, she'll be seven this fall. My two kittens were dumped away with the trash at a dumpster at just 3 weeks of age. They're almost 7 months old now. I learned a great deal from my rescue animals. What have you learned from animals, yours or those you know? I'd love to hear about it. I love stories about animals, be it a dog, cat, elephant or deer. Animals are special. They don't have a voice and thus, need ours to speak  up for them, always and forever.

When considering a pet, make adoption your first option….

When considering a pet, make adoption your first option….

Over the years, I've had the privilege of adopting fourteen (14) rescue dogs and cats from kill and no-kill shelters as well as a few strays. I've loved them all and have no regrets in any of the adoptions. Most of them are dead now from old age, cancer and kidney disease.

I currently have five pet children: two dogs, one cat and two kittens. Aside from being loving and loyal, they all share something else in common. They are all rescues. My dogs came from no-kill shelters. My cat came from a kill shelter where she was one of fourteen cats available to adopt. The two kittens were abandoned at a garbage dumpster at just 3 weeks of age.
  My babies.

I’m a huge proponent for adopting an animal. Many dogs, cats, of every breed and sex are available and all you have to do is make a nominal adoption fee. Feel out an application and provide references.  When you’re in the market for a new pet, whether it be a dog, cat, rabbit, etc. make adoption your first option. Don’t shop; adopt. You’ll feel good for doing so and you’ll gain a loyal and loving companion for life.
  All rescues.

  All thriving.

Why should you adopt a shelter pet, a dog, etc.? Here’s why…watch this you tube video with talented Tonya and find out more….

Hope you enjoyed this video. More so, I hope you learned something from it. Something you can take with you and share with others. Why adopt a shelter animal? Because it will change your entire life for the good. Thanks to TalentedK9Tonya for allowing me to use her video for this post.

My Personal tips:

Keep your pets inside with you, in a garage, or at least inside a safely, enclosed fenced area in the back of your house; not the front. Out front kids and ne-er the wells will tease your pets, or worse poison them.

Make sure they're micro-chipped, or at least wear a harness or collar with a name tag with your information on him/her. Keep a current photo of your pet, just in case.

Never, ever, go out, away, even for a couple of hours with your pet outside, even in the yard. Pets can be poisoned, stabbed, or shot even on your property.

Until next time….hug your animals. Tell them you love them. If you don’t have a pet, adopt one. Make adoption your first option when seeking a pet. Adopt. Don’t shop. Can’t adopt. Please consider fostering one. Donate or volunteer at your local shelter. Whatever you do, however you do it, please be a voice for the animals large and small. I love cats of all sizes: Watch as rescued lion hugs her human rescuer...110lbs of love.

I love cats of all sizes: Watch as a rescued lion shares the love with her human rescuer:

 http://www.today.com/pets/man-who-rescued-lion-gets-big-grateful-hug-viral-video-2D80168548

via @todaypets:

What you're watching is Valentin Gruener getting a 110-pound "thanks!" from Sirga the lioness, who he helped raise from cubhood after her pack turned her away. She currently lives at Gruener's Modisa Wildlife Project, which is based in Botswana, Africa.

If Sirga's affectionate reaction jars your memory a bit, you might be recalling Christian the lion, whose story went viral in 2009 when a video of his emotional reunion with his human "parents" surfaced. Christian's story dates to the 1960s, but it was a clip from the end of a documentary about their story that revived the tale on YouTube and showed us all that lions are a little like elephants — they never forget.

Thanks for stopping by. It's greatly appreciated! Until next time, tell your pet you love him/her. Give him/her a tight hug. If you don’t have a pet, consider adopting one. Just be sure to realize the responsibility involved. When you adopt a pet, you take on the responsibility of loving, caring for and protecting that animal. More about that in a later post. Be nice to one another. Smile! Show compassion!
Cheers!

Dogs are being skinned, butchered & boiled alive. We have to stop this NOW!

Help shut Down the Illegal Dog Meat Trade in Thailand Now!
Dogs captured and caged waiting for slaughter.

Earlier this week, exactly two days before Thanksgiving, I discovered something horrific that occurs in a great many countries in this world. In Switzerland, 3% of the population eat cats and make dogs into sausages.  In Nepal, thousands of animals are gathered every five years and slaughtered in accordance with their religion. In Vietnam, dog’s meat is a delicacy. After their fur is skinned off of them while alive, dog’s throats are cut and the blood is drained to make them into a meal. The worse atrocity of all I have never heard of before is what is occurring in Thailand. Just when I thought I heard the most horrible and inhumane acts of animal cruelty such as dog fighting and factory farming in the United States, along with the previous I heard about this barbaric practice:
More captured dogs awaiting slaughter.

In most Asian countries, dog meat is a delicacy where dogs are kidnapped from loving homes or picked up along the roads where they were abandoned. In Thailand, these dogs are collected and smuggled from Thailand by criminals to neighboring countries such as Vietnam where the dogs undergo the worst torment I’ve ever heard of and it must be stopped now! Once picked up and thrown into cages, instead, of being given love, food and shelter, these dogs are stacked into cages on top of one another where none of them can move. Some of them are crushed to death or suffer internal injuries from the weight of the other dogs on top of them. Then when the human monsters decide it is time, some in Thailand, others sent to Vietnam and neighboring countries, these helpless, abandoned dogs are beaten, boiled and skinned alive because these people believe that fear tenderizes the meat. I had nightmares about this ever since I saw the story on Facebook. I went immediately to the SOI Dog Foundation to sign the petition to put a halt against this barbaric practice. I also donated funds to put up billboards in Thailand to advertise the need to stop this. At $25.00 a billboard, I put the money to good use. I then went to the web site and made a donation to the actual charity that rescues, treats and homes these animals.
Dog injured and rescued. Many dogs suffocate slowly or die from hideous injuries on their way to primitive slaughter facilities. They are the lucky ones.

Imagine what these poor dogs are thinking when they see a human and instead of being rescued, the dogs are thrown, not put, slammed into a cage. If it’s the first dog, others are thrown into the cage on top of this one and all the others squashed in with him/her. None of them can move. None of them can protect themselves. The only way out of this cage is being skinned, beaten and boiled alive for human consumption.

This entire practice makes me sick. It makes me dislike humans more every day. It is up to you and me to stop this. Words are useless at this point and no matter what I say here, I think the people at SOI Dog Foundation, an animal rescue facility is Thailand says it best:
More dogs stuffed into cages & awaiting a barbaric fate.

From SOI Dog:
“The trade’s terrified victims, many of them family pets, are crushed into cages and suffer horribly on the prolonged journey to slaughter.
They are transported to primitive abattoirs that should be called torture chambers.
There, these poor animals are not just killed. Instead, they are often systematically and brutally beaten, skinned alive or boiled alive.
These horrors are inflicted because of the barbaric belief that when they are in pain, their bodies release adrenaline that softens their meat.
Terror, torture, then a painful death. This is quite possibly the worst form of cruelty humans could inflict on innocent animals.
This is a dog spared from death with the help of Thai people. But we need to harness much wider people power to shut down the dog meat industry.

You can put a stop to this. Add your name to the petition now:

https://savedogs.soidog.org/petition?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social_a&utm_content=post19molly&utm_campaign=IDKpetition

In Thailand, this hideous industry is illegal. Most Thai people don’t even know it is going on in their country – because dog meat traders are increasingly secretive. Thai criminals kidnap dogs from their homes and along the roads in order to smuggle them over the borders illegally. It is generally not Thai’s who eat dogs and the majority are not slaughtered in Thailand. This mainly happens in the countries north of Thailand such as Vietnam. A lot of dogs from Thailand are victims of this trade however as criminals from Thailand collect street dogs and peoples pets and smuggle them over the borders illegally. There has been some evidence of slaughter in Thailand, but certainly not to the scale of the other countries.
Soi Dog is a charity that works with authorities on the ground in Thailand and other countries to flush out traders and care for rescued dogs.
The more social and political pressure we can put on dog meat traders, the more dogs will be spared. That’s why we want the support of the highest levels of leadership, and why your name on the petition will really help.
Soi Dog and our partners have already managed to intercept trucks carrying the dogs to slaughter. The condition of the animals was heartbreaking.
Dogs being rescued by authorities from a barbaric death preceded by torture.
By working with Thai police and government, Soi Dog has saved 1000’s of dogs from death and brought dog meat traders to justice.

There were terrified dogs crammed into each cage - packed on top of each other. Some had suffocated under the weight of the bodies above them. Others had horrible injuries – broken bones and ruptured internal organs. Some had open wounds or their paws ripped off. We know that trucks like these often travel for days, in sweltering heat, and that the dogs receive no water or food.
There’s so much more to this story and so much you can do to help.
Please start by signing this important petition and sending it to as many people as possible.

Want to do even more than just sign a petition? I did. I bought 5 for $25.00 each.

Buy a billboard that tells Thai people about the dog meat trade and offers a reward to help shut it down.

Every Billboard = 1000's More People Against The Dog Meat Trade
Captured dogs rescued get their taste of freedom with food and water.

The dog meat trade in Southeast Asia is the most disgusting form of cruelty that humans inflict on animals.
Yet most Thai people don’t even know it is going on in their beautiful country.
Will you please buy a billboard to tell them about it, and recruit them in the global campaign to shut down this horrific trade?
When anti-dog-trade charity Soi Dog put up trial billboards, local people passed on information that lead to arrests – and the lives of hundreds of dogs were saved.
Please help us take this campaign even further. Buy a billboard that will go up in a town or along a highway on the dog-smuggling route in Northern Thailand.
It’s a powerful and effective way you can personally stop the suffering and torture of dogs.
Buy a billboard and help take the dog meat campaign to the streets.
With just a few dollars, $25.00 to be exact, you can magnify your impact – and spare many more dogs from this horrific trade.

The majority of Thai people would be shocked and appalled if they knew what was happing in their beautiful country.
But they don’t know because dog meat traders usually do their deadly business in secret. And they’re getting better and better at hiding it.
That’s why these billboards are so important. They not only alert local people to the horrible trade, they tell them what to look out for, and what to do if they see suspicious activity.
Billboard telling citizens to alert authorities about suspicious activity.

This is what the billboards say:
To report dog or cat snatcher trucks, areas where dogs are collected or slaughterhouses call the Hotline 088-302-7556 open 24 hours a day.
You can stop the illegal dog and cat meat trade!
Reward of 5,000 baht for information leading to an arrest.
When making a report please:
  1. If possible photograph the vehicle, including the registration plates.
  2. Provide vehicle registration number, type of vehicle (brand/model), location and estimated number of dogs or cats involved.
Eating or killing cats and dogs is ILLEGAL!

The billboards also advertise a 5,000 Thai Baht reward for information leading to arrests.
It’s a really practical, effective and low-cost way to squeeze dog meat traders out of business.
With your help, we can buy more billboards to go up on major trade routes through Thailand, and in the towns where dogs are often stolen from.
It doesn’t cost a lot by our standards to buy a billboard, but this strategy can make a big impact – in the short term by leading to arrests, and in the long term by educating tens of thousands of people.
Ultimately, the biggest impact is on the dogs that will be spared from disgusting and unnecessary cruelty.
Take your care for animals to the streets of Thailand.
Buy a billboard and help shut down the dog meat trade.

Ricky Gervais, Judi Dench and other prominent celebrities are lending their voices to this campaign against the horrific dog meat trade in Thailand. Now that you know about it, will you?

Special thanks to our friends Environment Films for donating their time, expertise and for producing this film.

The History of the Soi Dog Foundation

Soi Dog was founded in 2003 by Margot Homburg Park and John and Gill Dalley. Phuket was growing rapidly at the time and the stray dog population was increasing at a fast pace. Witnessing the suffering endured by street animals John, Gill and Margot held Soi Dog’s first clinics utilizing volunteer vets from overseas. 2004 saw numerous clinics held around the island, the foundation began to grow. When no volunteer vets were available dogs would be taken to local vets, who provided low cost sterilization for the foundation.
