A Shelter Dog's Poem....

A note from S.J. Francis:
Hi all to my fellow animal lovers!
Years ago when I adopted my first senior dog from a No-Kill Shelter, the animal shelter manager sent me this poem. I loved it and I had to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do/did.
As she put it to me,
"I received a very sweet and thoughtful email from Angel Wells in Martinsburg WV. Angel wrote a poem about her dog that I'd like to share with you. Angel wrote, "All of my dogs are shelter dogs, but I wrote this poem about one of them in particular. He is my chihuahua/papillon mix that has become my
therapy dog. He is very special to me and I couldn't live without him. Fate brought us together, and I think if other people would take the time to look in their local shelter, they might find their soul mate as well"
All good dogs deserve a chance. Here is her poem:

A Shelter Dog's Poem
Once upon a time, you see,
There was this little pup
For reasons unbeknownst to me,
His family gave him up
Maybe it was chewing
Everything that he could find
Maybe they were busy and
Just didn't have the time
They took him to the shelter
And they just left him there
Outside, alone, in the cage
Shivering and scared
Even though they knew inside
If he went through those doors
He may never have the chance
To find a home like yours
He sat there crying silently
Wondering what he did
That was so bad that they just
Had to leave him like they did
However fate was smiling
On that little pup that day
Because a lady saw him
And she whisked him right away
He got a second chance at life
That others may have not
And now he's in a loving home
With everything he wants
Every day he gets that love
That he was looking for
And silently is thankful for when
She walked through that door
Others may not have this chance
So open up your heart
And adopt a shelter dog to take
And give a brand new start.

This is Mook at his happiest with snow.

I never stopped adopting animals. In fact all five of my current fur babies are rescues. My first senior dog that I adopted before I received this poem was named Mook. He had separation anxiety and epilepsy, and spent nearly all his life in that animal shelter during his seven years of life. Somehow or other, he was taken back to the same shelter three different times before we came along. I'll never forget that day I looked into his cage and he looked back and without hesitation he licked my face. That was it for me. The deal was made and done. He was the one and we took him home with us.
We had him in our lives for nearly three years until Lymphoma took him away from us and never once did he ever have a seizure of a bout of separation anxiety. We loved him dearly and still miss him so. It's in his honor and all the other fur babies that we've adopted/rescued before and since him that we continue to do so. If you ever get a chance to adopt/rescue an animal, take it seriously, and give that animal all you have and you will never regret your decision or ever be alone.~S.J. Francis

From Shelter Rescue To Police Dog: These Canines Get A New Leash On Life....

A note from SJ Francis:  I love animals.  Any one and everyone that knows me knows that. Never speak badly or treat any animal poorly anywhere near me, because I have no problem with speaking up for animals. I donate regularly to shelters, both time and money. Another way I am a voice for the animals is starting this blog. The more I read the more I find and the more I have to share. Hence, this blog is going from a monthly format to a bi-weekly format as I share more and more for the animals. Don't worry though. All my posts remain on this blog indefinitely for you to peruse and share. If you are one for the animals, too, please don't hesitate to share this post, too any time you want to.
I'm one for the animals, are you? I hope so. Together you and I can make a difference in the lives of animals, large and small, domestic and wild. Make adoption your first option. Adopt. Don't shop.

From The Animal Rescue Site:

For a long time, American police dog training schemes regularly imported K9 dogs from abroad. Puppies, which were specially bred and hand selected to perform in a superior manner, were shipped in and trained at US facilities. Recently, however, a training center in San Antonio, Texas, has begun turning to a different source for future K9 units: shelters. When they’re selected by Universal K9, shelter dogs leave their pens and embark upon a very different journey in police work.

Ironically, the shelter dogs rescued by Universal are often dogs that nobody wants to adopt. They’re high-energy animals with significant amounts of spirit: certainly a handful for most households. Undesirable as those qualities might be in a pet, however, they are ideal for K9 work.

Instead of euthanasia, high energy animals go to Universal K9’s eight-week course, during which they’re trained in explosive and drug detection, scent tracking and more. When fully trained, the dogs get delivered to police departments for free. They’re matched with police handlers and go home with their chosen officers every night. In essence, they get their “forever homes” via police families.

Once such dog, Remi, found her calling after being picked up on the streets. A mixed-breed dog, Remi was about 3-years old when she got into the Universal K9 training class. After successfully completing training, Remi went home with Corporal Wesley Keeling of the South Dallas Midlothian Police Department. The two began working happily together at the beginning of 2015.
During the first six months of 2015, Univeral K9 rescued, rehabilitated and trained approximately 60 dogs, before re-homing them with local police departments. Stories like Remi’s prove that even the most boisterous rescue dogs thrive in the right environments. Read below to find out more about how shelter dogs receive help from the most unlikely quarters.

Guest Post: Walking to Save Dog Meat Dogs, 11 March to 19 March, 2017....

A note from SJ Francis:  I love animals.  Any one and everyone that knows me knows that. Never speak badly or treat any animal poorly anywhere near me, because I have no problem with speaking up for animals. I donate regularly to shelters, both time and money. Another way I am a voice for the animals is running this blog. Honestly, up until a year ago, I had no idea that people in certain areas of the world consume cat and dogs. They even center parties around the consumption of dog and cat meat and call them festivals. Of course, they're not actually festivals as most people know the word. In places like China, Philippines, South Korea and Vietnam, citizens consume companion animals for meals. Worse yet, they don't kill the animals first. Instead, they torture the animals, beating the dogs and cats, skinning them and boiling and frying them alive in the belief that the meat will taste better. Even worse, not content with picking up stray dogs and cats from the streets, the dog meat thieves steal people's ets and cross borders into countries such as Thailand where they don't eat dog and cat meat. If that doesn't turn your stomach, I don't know what will. Since then, I regularly contribute to charities overseas such as Soi Dog Foundation   http://www.soidog.org/en/dogmeat/

Soi Dog helps raise awareness of the Dog Meat Farm industry and rescue the dogs and cats, who are the victims of the Dog Meat eating craze. Anything I can do to help stop this horrific practice, I shall do. Read on if you can and learn about the most terrible form of animal cruelty you have heard of. For more info how you can help, read the bottom of this post. ~~S.J. Francis

The following is a Guest Post by Robert Donkers:
“Walking to Save Dogs wants to make sure that the wider world know that the dog meat trade does not just happen for and during the well-known dog meat eating festivals Yulin and Bok Nal.  Every day many dogs are slaughtered in the most cruel ways. In Korea, Indonesia, Cambodia, Northern India, Laos, Philippines, Viet Nam and China dogs are boiled alive, burnt alive, skinned alive, hung or bludgeoned to death.”
“The Dog Meat Industry will not come to an end soon, and probably not during my life-time, but if we do not set the movement to end it in motion, the Dog Meat Trade will continue to exist.”
“Help me start ending it and make those horrendous pictures and films of suffering dogs something of the past. You don’t want to see them anymore than I do, so please help me and my dogs to raise funds.”

About our 2017 Fundraiser
“Every year my seven little troupers, Justin Johnson, my sister Daisy (who flies in all the way from the United States) and I walk a heritage walk to raise monies. So far we have completed Hadrian’s Wall, The West Highland Way, The Great Glen Way and the Weardale Walk.  This year we thought we should explore the South-West. We will be travelling to the Jurassic Coast and walking almost the entire 95 mile path between Exmouth and Poole.”
“This year, you can choose either to donate to a specific project we are working with, including the Vietnam Animal Aid and RescueDogs Mountain in The Philippines and the Bali Animal Welfare Association in Indonesia, or you can donate directly to Walking to Save Dogs. This will help to fund my future 4-5 month, 2,650 mile Pacific Coast trek in the USA during which I will be raising even more awareness and continuing to fight this barbaric trade.”

With Your Help Thailand's Illegal Dog Meat Trade Can Be Stopped!
Every year tens of thousands of dogs are inhumanely transported from Thailand to neighbouring countries where they are butchered by cruel and barbaric methods. However, the Soi Dog Foundation and the Thai government are actively working to end this appalling practice.
The conditions under which the dogs are transported and slaughtered are inhumane and many die from suffocation long before they reach neighbouring countries. In reality these are the lucky ones.
Those that are still alive are not humanely killed many are tortured often for hours before being skinned alive. The reason for this is that people believe that the pain inflicted leads to the tenderising of the meat. Most shocking of all, is that some dogs are still alive when their fur is removed.
However progress is being made. Soi Dog with other animal welfare groups has presented draft legislation to the Thai Parliament for strong animal welfare laws to be enacted.
This tragic trade is condemned by the majority of Thailand’s population. However the practice still continues. Only through your help can this inhumane action stop.
Since active campaigning was begun in late 2011 more arrests of smugglers have occurred than during anytime in the past.
In late 2011 arrests were made in the north-eastern province of Nakhom Phanom with more than 1,000 dogs rescued from tiny cages. Four trucks were intercepted attempting to smuggle the dogs out of the country. The dogs, stacked high in metal cages were being transported to Vietnam for slaughter and consumption. 119 had already died of suffocation in the cramped cages!
Since this initial arrest the Royal Thai Police and Royal Thai Navy aided by Soi Dog's undercover investigators have made over 25 more arrests!
These incidences have captured the world’s attention and with your help this practice can be stopped! You can help Soi Dog and the Thai government eliminate the pain and suffering of hundreds of thousands of dogs. Please donate today to help Soi Dog continue helping the dogs of Thailand. At Soi Dogs you can even sponsor or adopt an animal…
